Sunday Book Study: Eye of the Heart
May 23 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
The Sunday Contemplative Book Study meets every other Sunday at 10 a.m. On Sunday May 23rd, we will be reading Eye of the Heart by Cynthia Bourgeault, through the end of the fourth chapter. We’ll be starting off with a follow-up to last week’s discussion, about the practice of tonglen and/or intercessory prayer. Please take a look at the Helen Luke chapter entitled “Suffering” as an aid to this discussion. If you don’t have that available, please email descamp(at)heartsrest(dot)com and I’ll send a scan of the material.
One thing to consider–the quote at the start of the introduction is an important key. Cynthia is laying out an elaborate mental construction to explain the world. Some parts of it may feel odd or foreign to many of us. But the purpose of a mental construction is, like a map, to help identify the direction in which we want to travel. Just because it feels weird, it’s not automatically wrong or delusional! Like any good metaphor, a mental construction will highlight certain relationships and realities that we might miss otherwise.
If you’re interested in joining, email Therese (descamp(at)heartsrest(dot)com) for the link and more info.
